Role in the supply chain

The vital role of ocean freight in the global supply chain

In today’s globalized economy, sea freight plays a mission-critical role in international supply chains. Over 80% of the world’s total cargo volume moves by sea — from raw materials and machinery to consumer goods.

Reduces pressure on other modes

International sea freight eases the load on other transport modes, especially air cargo.

Much lower cost

Lets cargo move at a fraction of the cost of air freight, optimizing your logistics budget.

A truly global network

Wingo connects with major shipping lines, international partners, and port networks across Asia, Europe, and the US.

Why choose sea freight

Reasons to choose ocean freight shipping

Sea freight is the optimal choice for a wide range of cargo types and shipping purposes.

Low cost

Significantly cheaper than other transport modes, especially for large or heavy shipments.

High capacity & versatility

Moves large volumes and diverse cargo types: containers, bulk cargo, hazardous goods, refrigerated goods, and more.

Ideal for long-term import/export

Well suited to long-term international trade, especially routes to the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

High reliability

Less affected by weather than air freight, with fewer delays and fixed schedules.

Lower risk

Reduced risk of damage when goods are properly packed and shipped in dedicated containers.

Optimized logistics

Combines port-based logistics services: loading/unloading, warehousing, customs clearance, and more.

Wingo Logistics doesn’t just offer affordable sea freight — we provide an end-to-end solution, from route consulting and transparent quotes to document management and customs procedures.

Quoted per shipment

International sea freight rates

Ocean freight rates aren’t fixed — they shift with cargo type, route, container type, and time of year. Wingo Logistics quotes each shipment individually to guarantee the most accurate figure at the moment you ship, rather than applying a generic rate card.

Why isn’t there a fixed price list?

Freight rates, bunker adjustment factor (BAF) surcharges, and container availability fluctuate weekly — a fixed quote can easily be out of step with reality by the time you actually ship. Wingo quotes at the exact time you need it, so you’re not hit with unexpected costs.

What determines freight rates?

1. Cargo type

Oversized, hazardous, fragile, or refrigerated cargo costs more due to the specialized equipment and handling it requires.

2. Route & origin/destination ports

Routes within Asia are typically cheaper than routes to Europe, the US, Australia, or the Middle East. Popular routes: Vietnam → US, Canada, Australia, UAE.

3. Container type

20ft (~25–28 CBM): lower cost. 40ft (~55–58 CBM): common for larger shipments. 40HC: for oversized cargo.

4. Peak vs. off-peak season

Rates rise during peak season (July–December) as demand grows ahead of holidays and year-end. Off-peak rates are typically softer.

Other fees and costs to be aware of

  • Freight charge — the base rate set by the carrier, which shifts weekly along with fuel price swings (BAF)
  • Lifting fees, container demurrage/detention (DEM/DET), and storage fees if customs clearance is delayed
  • Surcharges: THC, CIC, CAF, documentation fee, AMS/ENS

Wingo commits to transparent, all-inclusive quotes with no hidden fees.

Shipping methods

Choose the method that fits your shipment

Container shipping is the most common and safest method, protecting cargo from environmental exposure while meeting international standards.

Full container load (FCL) shipment at Wingo
Full Container Load (FCL)

FCL — Full Container Load

For customers with enough cargo to fill an entire container: 20ft, 40ft, or 40HC — suited to dry, industrial, or refrigerated goods.

  • Exclusive use and sealing of the container
  • Safer, with no risk of mixed-up handoffs
  • Faster transit — no waiting to consolidate cargo
Consolidated LCL shipment at a Wingo warehouse
LCL consolidation at the warehouse

LCL — Less than Container Load

Suited to small shipments that don’t fill a whole container. Wingo consolidates cargo from multiple customers to optimize cost.

  • Cost savings for smaller shipments
  • Flexible in weight and quantity
  • Still meets full safety standards for packing and transport

Bulk cargo shipping by sea

A solution for cargo that can’t or doesn’t need to be containerized: steel, cement, heavy machinery, oversized/overweight cargo, project cargo, and construction equipment.

Bulk carriers

Carry raw materials such as coal, fertilizer, and cement.

Breakbulk vessels

Used for large, non-uniform cargo that isn’t containerized.

RO-RO vessels

Built for mobile vehicles and equipment such as trucks and heavy machinery.

Global network

Port connections in over 50 countries

Wingo Logistics helps customers export to more than 50 countries, most notably the US, Canada, Australia, the UAE, and countries across Asia, via the domestic ports of Cat Lai (Ho Chi Minh City), Cai Mep (Ba Ria – Vung Tau), and Hai Phong.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs about sea freight shipping

How long does sea freight take?

On average: Vietnam → US 22–35 days, Vietnam → Canada 25–32 days, Vietnam → Australia 15–25 days, Vietnam → Europe 25–40 days depending on the port, and Southeast Asia routes (Singapore, Thailand) 7–10 days. These figures don’t include cargo consolidation, container packing, inspection, domestic delivery, or customs clearance at the destination.

Do ocean freight rates change with the season?

Yes. Rates rise during peak season (July–December) due to higher demand ahead of holidays and Tet, while off-peak months (January–April, June) tend to be cheaper. Fuel price swings, geopolitical factors, and container shortages also affect pricing.

Can I track my container in transit?

Yes. Wingo provides the container/Bill of Lading number and an online tracking link from the shipping line, so you can check your shipment’s status in real time, with proactive updates at key milestones.

Is LCL shipping affordable?

Yes. LCL is the most cost-effective option when you don’t have enough cargo to fill a full container — you only pay for the volume you actually use (by CBM). Transit time can run about 2–4 days longer than FCL due to cargo consolidation and splitting at the port.
